Why are roofs not made out of interlocking plastic sheets instead of stupid single tiles?

Cause having paid 拢900 to get my Mum's kitchen extension roof re-tiled after a untraceable leak amongst the old tiles, where water came in and damaged the internal kitchen ceiling below.........





....I mean the whole section could have just been a sheet of rigid black plastic and job done surely? Totally waterproof. Why are roofs not made out of interlocking plastic sheets instead of stupid single tiles?
They do make roofing products that are plastic. They are in smaller sections than you describe but they do exist. pretty cool really, they are molded to look like many different styles of roofing.Why are roofs not made out of interlocking plastic sheets instead of stupid single tiles?

but, how big would the sheets be? they would have to be quite thick so as to stand up to exteme temp. changes without warping. and if they were so thick, the would likely pose a trimming problem.also, pretty ugly.


they way i understand it, there IS tar paper underneath the shingles that are to unify the protection.
plastic would be damaged by the sun to quickly and crack. There are quite a few things a person can do to help extend the life of their roofs so as to avoid costly repairs so often. But they all depend on the weather where you are at too.
Plastic degrades in the sun, plain and simple.





In fact, they say the tons of plastic floating around in the oceans will only go away once the sun fully degrades it.
big bits move to much with the hot and cold weather. plus its a good way to get more money out of people.
Do as the Spanish do.Concrete it.
