You can get it at upholstery shops, fabric shops (JoAnnes has it) some craft stores and even some boat showrooms. I don't advise putting it over your dining room table if it is wood, however. The heat from plates may stick it to the wood, it is not thick enough to act as a heat barrier that is why you often see sheet glass used for this purpose. In addition, wood needs to breath and plastic won't allow it to do so. You would be better served to use placemats, chargers and a cloth table cloth or even what they call table pads for your purposes. You could even have the hardware or home improvement center cut you a piece of plexiglass to size then put the clear acyrlic rubber bumpers on the bottom to let the table breathe. The only problem is that plexi scratches easily but at least it saves the table.Where can I purchase a thin sheet of plastic (not a plastic table cloth) to go over my dining room table?
check tap plastics

Most hardware stores will have Lexan. It is a bullet proof plastic( If thick enough 1/4 inch or more) that will protect your table. I would put a good quality paste wax on it first and then set the lexan in place. It is not cheap but it will protect your table for years and it will not yellow as easily as normal plastic.
home depot, hopefully they have a big enough piece, they'll cut it for you, make sure you have correct measurement.
If they don't, look in your phone book.
I'm sure you can find something.
Try Walmart or Hobby Lobby
Some home improvement store sell a clear vinyl. it comes on a roll and you can buy it by the foot. It is usually by the windows and screen repair area Tape it to your table top and trim it with a razor blade.
